Muscle relaxing – Botox

What is botulinum toxin A?
Botulinum toxin A is commonly referred to as ‘Botox’. It is a bacteria or protein that is responsible for blocking the transmitting impulses that illicit muscle contraction. It has been widely used in medicine for over 25 years and has become widely known for its cosmetic benefits.

How does it work?
A series of small injections target hyperactive muscles that produce lines between the brows and forehead and/or crows feet around the eyes. The muscles are temporarily relaxed giving facial expression a softer appearance. Smaller amounts of ‘botox’ can be administered to retain some movement for a more natural look or more to eradicate stubborn lines. Please discuss your preferred look with your practitioner. If you have deep long-standing wrinkles added filler will produce the desired result.

How long does it take to work and last for?
‘Botox’ does not work instantly.  You will start to see results within 3-5 days with the full result seen in 2 weeks.  It generally lasts for 3-4 months in the first year starting treatment and then lasts longer over the course of time.  At your first treatment a smaller dose is given and a ‘top up’ is offered as a follow up to ensure desired effect.

Potential adverse effects.
‘Botox’ is an established safe procedure but nevertheless there are potential side effects that can occur.  These are often short lived and reversible.
